Matt Chandler: "Dare to Dream: How Reading and Writing Can Change Your Life” Matt Chandler is a former newspaper editor and freelance writer from New York. He is also the author of more than 20 books for children. His Sports Illustrated Kids book, "Side-by-Side Baseball Stars: Comparing the Game's Greatest Players" was selected as the 2015 Best Non-Fiction Children's Book by the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA). He is also a six-time New York Press Association Award Winner. He travels to elementary schools across the country speaking to thousands of students each year as part of his popular author visits. Tom Knight Puppets: Tom Knight Puppets is a collection of songs and skits for children of all ages - about animals, the environment, food, and books. Favorites include "Alligator Jump," "The Garbage Monster," and Henry the Magician, plus songs from Tom’s most recent CD "The Classroom Boogie!” Visit his website at

Dr. Nageldinger has written and presented on literacy topics at numerous conferences both home and abroad. Primarily interested in oral reading and its impact on silent reading comprehension, he is a strong advocate of expressive reading. His recent book, The Fluency Factor, co-authored with Tim Rasinski, was released last fall through Teachers College Press. Dr. Nageldinger is excited to be working with Elmira College teacher education students to bring Readers Theatre to Book Fest this year.

has been providing our Southern Tier community with quality dramatic and musical performances for one hundred and seventeen years. Innumerable shows have come and gone—students have graduated and moved on to lives in and out of show business. Actors have been prepared, as have designers and stage managers—but also teachers (in very many fields), politicians, and lawyers. Today, the theatre produces at least five productions yearly in its two theatres, plus special events such as this one.

JOHN J. KELLY is currently Professor of Theatre and Director of the Theatre Program at Elmira College. After well over 250 professional and educational theatre productions, he be-gan work as a playwright less than five years ago. In that time, his plays have been published, anthologized, and performed in high schools, colleges, and professional theatres in New York, Chicago, and Washington. SPECIAL will be included in the upcoming Best 5-Minute Plays for Teens to be published in April by Applause Books.

Chris Bell is an art teacher and illustrator from Horseheads, NY. He has an extensive portfolio including illustration, graphic design and digital artwork for a wide range of clients. Chris is the illustrator for Zero Comics and has published several children's books. His newest book, "Draw Yourself Stupid," is a "How to Draw" book that teaches the basics of sequential drawing. Chris is currently at teacher at Horseheads Intermediate School.

The Book Fest is a free annual event that offers book-centered fun to community familes. The Family Reading Partnership organizes the event and partners with individuals, organizations, and businesses throughout the area to bring parents and children together around the excitement of children's books.

The Book Fest:

  • Helps the community come together to celebrate children's literature

  • Heightens interest in books and promotes family reading

  • Encourages teaches to use books interactively in the classroom

  • Involves community organizations and individuals in the effort

  • Creates a show piece event for the community
